Many schools lack the funds or resources to provide quality education for every child in Gendetesfa. Project Hope helps meet the needs of both teachers and students by providing the people and the tools to give children more learning opportunities.
In 2014, the first team of teachers traveled to Gendetesfa to provide English instruction. In Ethiopia, students must pass national English exams in 6th, 8th and 12th grades in order to advance to the next grade level. The teachers at the primary school have very limited knowledge of English, so effectively preparing students for these exams is difficult. Since that first visit, teams of teachers return almost every year to hold an English camp for the students, whose English has improved. Many of the Gendetesfa teachers willingly come during their vacation to help manage the students and subsequently learn more English. In 2023, Chesterfield County Public Schools donated 30 of their retired Chromebooks which allowed Project Hope to establish the first computer lab at Gendetesfa Primary School. Since then Patrick County Public Schools

When I joined Project Hope as a teacher, I believed it was all about us bringing hope to Gendetesfa school. I couldn’t have been more mistaken. While we may have inspired some hope in the students, the hope they’ve given me has been more transformative than anything I’ve ever experienced. Their passion for learning in every class, their enthusiasm, and their commitment to doing their best truly fill my heart with renewed joy. 
Playing with the kids and engaging with the community allowed me to learn from our differences and similarities. As a first-time team member, this experience has broadened my perspective as a mother, a teacher, and a global citizen. The hope they’ve given me for a brighter future is invaluable, and I eagerly anticipate returning to strengthen the bonds I’ve formed with my students and friends.
